The making of “The Suit Room”

The Suit Room

We take a look back at the partial store refit at Donalds Menswear in early 2022.

Here’s how the area looked before, and once the plans had been finalised, it was time to begin clearing everything out…

When the carpet and Karndean planks had been removed, we found some flooring issues (evidence of Woodworm and Damp/Rot – It’s an old building!), so we had to strip out and back much further than originally planned. The entire original floor was taken up, all loose plaster still attached to the walls was removed, plus that which had naturally fallen off over time and had blocked the air vents. The new floor was then built around six inches higher (allowing better airflow underneath), with a thermal/vapour barrier to help with the thermal efficiency of the room.

With the new floor in place and the walls newly studded, thermal/vapour proofed and plasterboarded, it was time to resume the planned works. This began with the building of two new, bigger fitting rooms with useful storage areas, the replacement of the old window with a new double glazed unit, and an electrician tidying up the electrics and fuse boards.

Next it was the turn of the shopfitting team to complete the rest of the refit; a new ceiling with all power/data cables hidden above and with new ceiling speakers for the radio, LED lighting and energy efficient Infrared heating panels, new commercial Karndean flooring planks laid, dark wood effect slatwall panels to clad one wall and the fitting rooms, new made to measure dark wood effect cabinets with internal hanging fixtures and/or shelving and bespoke matching cornices around all of the new fixtures. We fitted the stone effect wall panels ourselves 🙂

And that was that. Apart from filling up with stock of course! Here’s how the new Suit Room looks:

Thanks and credit goes to:

Thank you to Ian (The Boss) for taking the ideas in our heads, onto plans and seeing it through to the finished product; To Carlow and Mark for a shed-load of work on the new ceiling, fitting all the new cabinets, slatwall cladding the outside of the fitting rooms and all the finishing touches and snagging! To Dave for giving us power, light, sound, data and heat; And finally, to Richard for the brilliantly laid new floor.
  • And thanks again to all the above, for all the laughs along the way 😊
